Such a great post, thank you! I'm 55 and had arthritis set in a couple years ago. I feel much better when I avoid flour, sugar and dairy but like you, I have an inner food monster so tend to yo-yo on sticking to an eating plan. I'm convinced that the majority of people, especially myself, who have an inner food (addiction) monster are trying to heal the inner broken child that results from traumatic events in our childhood. It's a subtle thing, but carbs (alcohol, etc.) do create a release of dopamine / relaxing effect and the first thing I want to do during a stressful day is stuff unhealthy foods. Here's to all of us who are working on healing and improving ourselves.

O my gosh!!! This is exactly what I was looking for. You hit the nail on the head. I have been contemplating dong the Bright Line Eating program, but it just thought that weighing and measuring would start me down the path of obsessing about that. I, too, am addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper!!!! I can drink a whole 2 liter in a day. It would give me diarrhea, but I was hooked on it. I am an 9 on the addiction scale. I need to lose weight. I think just keeping with the first three lines is a start! Thank you for "oversharing"!

I tried going vegan but I didn't like the way I felt. Maybe it's because I'm O+ and we're supposed to eat meat. I tend to follow a more keto-friendly diet. I don't eat artificial sweeteners like Splenda since I heard they are poison and I haven't drunk soda/pop for many, many years. They're empty calories but if you're going to drink soda, you're better off drinking regular soda than diet. If I do want to sweeten something, I use maple syrup, honey or monkfruit. I once watched a doctor talk about veganism/vegetarianism. He said if you become those for ethical reasons, that's one thing but if you're doing it for health reasons, you're misguided.

You are right about forgetting the weighing and measuring. That is no way to live and it is not necessary for sustainable weight loss if we are eating the right foods, meaning mostly natural, whole food, and plant based, "to the left of the red line" and people can find these charts online. Keeping these "bright lines" is amazingly helpful at curbing cravings. Another good book is "The Pleasure Trap" by evolutionary psychologist Doug Lisle who works with patients at the True North Health Center where people eat a whole food, plant based, salt, oil, sugar free diet, plus fasting. It is powerfully healing. If anyone is sick with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, skin problems, autoimmune diseases, please consider checking out this facility and the diet. These diseases are REVERSIBLE. It can save your life. Thank you for this video. So important. Love your nails!

There are all kinds of vegan plant based styles of eating.  Eating the processed grain products even the whole grain breads, tortillas are really triggers.  You can still be plant based but just eat whole foods with about half the diet produce.  It's amazingly healthy .  Sounds like your plant based was not whole foods.   I have followed Susan for years.  You can still be plant based and do BLE.  Good luck!

I'm glad you've found something that works for you! The struggle is real, and you're right, people who don't experience eating /weight issues just don't understand. I always say, I could have added another twenty years of time to my life when I add up the mental and physical energy I've expended on these issues. I certainly understand the inability to have just one. In my teens my hormones were out of control and I had a tough time ever having "just one." But since I've been a life long dieter(and don't look nearly as slim and trim as you), I've done so many sugar cleanses that I have not craved sugar for years. Salt cleanses were super tough on me, I became an angry moody bear, which for me was an indicator of how much I needed to get it under control. Again being a life long dieter I long had given up fast food. I remember having French fries one time when my oldest daughter was about 12 and she said ' mom I've never seen you eat a fry!' So because of my weight and other health problems I've been seeing naturopaths and iridologists who over the years inspired me to eat chemically free and as cleanly as possible. So I guess I am healthier, but I remember a friend saying to me " I eat more after dinner than you do in a whole day". Sad but true. I was diagnosed as a celiac in my 40's and looking back I think it was hitting puberty that triggered the celiac condition so I had well over 20 years of damage and inflammation happening which was the root of my health issues and it continues to be. My husband is celiac also but has a great metabolism allowing him to eat gluten free cookies and gluten free breads and pizzas etc. But I have always severely limited them because they're still processed empty junky calories, gluten free or not. I stopped eating meat several years ago for compassion reasons, but because of our very active social schedule continue to eat eggs, dairy and fish( I don't want to make my eating plan a burden for others ie friends and family having to choose from a restricted number of restaurants or stressing over what to make us for a dinner). I've long broken the habit of eating after dinner and eating between meals, because I am by nature a snacker! But I read a few books way back when that said for women with thyroid issues that eating only at mealtime was beneficial, so not even veggies or fruit between meals. I now try to eat mostly a Pegan diet. Dr. Mark Hyman coined that term. It's mostly a cross between vegan and paleo. I certainly do agree with another comment, that even eating as much unprocessed food as possible, North American food is just chock full of chemicals. I have friends from Poland and Serbia who say when they go home they eat way more delicious food and don't gain a pound and when their relatives come to visit even though they try to make the most traditional unprocessed food for them, the relatives have said, we're sorry but we just taste so many chemicals. Keep us posted Beth on your journey💕

Actually a vegan diet is lacking over 15 vitamins that only come from animal products. I was vegan for 3 years it ruined my teeth destroyed my digestive system and landed me in the hospital. The vegan diet is extremely unhealthy it's loaded with anti nutrients. I would tell people to really really research the vegan diet before going on it. We absolutely need fat soluble animals vitamins and minerals they are vital for human health.

This is the first time I've seen your videos and I immediately have great respect for you. It's so true what you said about addictive personality. Some people are more prone to it while other's are not. I wish more people would open up about it like you have. Maybe people would become more empathetic especially to victims of the opioid crisis. Early in addiction, the addict is in denial, feels controlled by the substance and feels shame (put on them by themselves and society) that they can't do what is best for themself…ask for help. It's about one of three people who are prone to it. Oh! And, I appreciate your wisdom. If it's too much chattiness for someone they can skip through the video! Please stay confident lovely and don't ever doubt the wisdom that comes from your heart. If you don't mind I share a piece of wisdom of my own… Seeing you are a vlogger you must run into hatefulness from time to time, please remember this: don't satisfy evil with your sadness. 🌻btw I'm a 32 y.o. pharmacist and now a subscriber of your channel.

Hey Beth :-)) I know when I'm putting on some weight cos i know the junk food I'm putting in my mouth hee hee. I cut out and cut down when this happens, in my head i have the treat section so to speak. Usually the weekend then i have a treat 🙂 In my grandparents time they lived through the 2nd world war and i think it was 3 meals a day but when the kids came along in my mums family, there was 7 of them, my grandad was the only person who got a meal because they were poor. In say 1954 my mum was 14 and she told me that at christmas time if you got a bar of chocolate it would last her weeks lol and then she would keep the wrapping paper and smell it until the smell of chocolate had gone ha ha. She was always skinny cos her food was bread and jam you say jelly lol. True story ha ha. She was about 16 when she first saw cucumber at a party and thought it was a green tomato. oxoxox

Thank you for this. I DO understand. I'm definitely addicted. I also went to OA years ago, but the one I went to you could devise your own plan, not weigh and measure unless that was part of your self-created abstinence. My plan was 3 meals and one snack  (Bkfst and lunch 30min ea, dinner 45m, snack 15m), no sugar, no caffeine (including chocolate), no added fats, deep fried foods or high fat foods. I also walked 30 minutes every day in order to call myself 'abstinent'. I felt great and like a giant magnet had let go of me. I kept it up for a year, but then began to 'fudge' and finally went off completely. I was never able to get back on. But it sounds a little like your bright line eating in principle. I'll have to check out the book. Now, if only I could use those principles on my youtube watching addiction…

The first time I heard about sugar and carb addictions was in Dr. Kathleen DeMaison's book, “Potatoes not Prozac”.This was written in 2008 and it caught my interest because I have an unnatural relationship with sweets. She outlines in the book on how to balance your brain chemistry through diet. Specifically eating a potato before bed because it helps you sleep better. Dr. DeMaison worked with alcoholics and addicts for many years. What she found was, if they had a high carb and sugar diet, they were not able to quit their substance addictions. Only once their diet was cleaned up were they able to get off the substances. It has to do with low serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. Interesting read. I highly recommend it.
