Also, play completely relaxed and use all parts of your limbs when playing.
Thanks š
These are GREAT tips! My knees are already thanking you. Keep up the great work and I'll check out your other videos. Most appreciated.
Great video! A few added thoughts; #11. The drum set is the study of 4-limb-independence. Use your feet as much as your hands, even in fills. #10. I wish someone had told me about my posture! The first few years I played professionally I had poor posture and spent a lot of time and money on chiropractors. #9. Buy a good metronome and use it. Every day. #8. "Swing" is derived from triplet figures. #5 Buy a good metronome and use it. Every day. If you speed up when practicing exercises, you'll speed up at the gig. #1. NOTHING is more important than good timing! That's your primary job!
12. Nobody cares how fast you can play 0:30
11. Donāt play fills from your handsā¦ Play them from your ear 1:12
10. Save your knee 2:08
9. The ability to play slow, relaxed singles will help you to not rush 3:19
8. The āswingā in jazz actually comes from the quarter note 4:11
7. Record yourself 5:03
6. Relax 5:49
5. More energy does not equal more speed (and vice versa) 7:37
4. Figure out how to tune your drums 8:51
3. Spend just as much time sitting and listening to music through headphonesā¦ as you do physically practicing 9:55
2. A great snare sound has less to do with the snare itselfā¦ and more to do with how you hit it 10:59
1. Great feel isnāt just the result of great time. Itās equally the result of good dynamics, good kit mixing, and good consistency 12:12
Do we have to wear those shoes?
Nice!
Hmmmmm
How
Set a little higher was good posture dangle slightly
#6 is a life philosophy too. Beautifully said
I've had a virgin kick for quite some time now. I've found its really nice in regards to sitting further back from the kick. Without messing up your Tom placement or setup placement in general
that's hilarious about your chops comment. But it's so true. ANIMAL!!!
Been playing now for over 12 years and after practicing on a new kit today I had some pretty bad knee pain. Never happened to me before so I was really confused. But you are totally right! Looking back I was sitting way to close to the pedal. Great video!
Really I can apply your advice for #6 to help me relax in social situationsā¦ many thanks m8
Unlike other instruments, drumming requires literally nothing to make progress. There are no scales, no notes, no chords… Just hit stuff in a pattern. When i started I only played along with songs. Because drums are just noise. And from there, you can make "corrections" to what your favorite drummers play, because it's all about feeling. Don't like the fill, then change it. Too slow, add some stuff.
Iām 23 & Iāve been playing since I was 10 in church & in school & Iāve had a lot of experience in different live environments, these tips even helped me! These arenāt just great for beginners I think but for all drummers, Iām a firm believer in thereās always someone who knows more & Iām never done imporoving so videos like this help alot! š¤š¼
Good advice.
Good information, thank you!
I like how he says dont burry the kick then proceeds to burry the kick in his demos lol.
