As predicted, many fanboys are now claiming that I "took his video out of context". There is nothing in the video where he "recommends against 5-10% body fat". He shows the 1-4% zone and says not to go there (as if anyone actually cuts to 1-4% body fat) and then says "we need to veer toward these healthier ranges" and waves his hand over the 5-10% zone.
Sure, he mentions that it's EASIER to stay above 10%, but that's not the same thing as "recommending against it". What I'm telling you is that not only is going below 10% "harder" – it's flat out IMPOSSIBLE for the vast majority of you on any sort of ongoing basis and will be harmful to your physical and mental health if you make that your goal.
People think the purpose of a video like this is to "attack Jeff", when in reality I'm genuinely trying to help you so that you don't develop this obsessive "leaner is better" mentality.
If he WASN'T promoting those physiques as a realistic, attainable level then there would be NO reason to list "Athlean Range" above them with his logo. (Actually there is a reason, and it's because it associates his brand with it.) If he truly cared about his audience and wanted to be accurate, then he would list it more along the lines of 1-4% as unrealistic/dangerous, 5-10% as the extremely lean outlier zone, 11-15% as lean but sustainable, and 16-20% as still within the healthy range.
Some of you guys need to recognize that there are ways of communicating things without outright saying them. When you place your logo above a given body fat range/physique type, it implies that people can achieve that result by following your programs/advice. Maybe YOU don't personally see it that way, but I can guarantee you that's how the masses will perceive it.
He also posted the chart on Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/p/CRu6uNCs2Ab ) and the ONLY thing the caption says is that he recommends you stay above 5% body fat with no other context or disclaimers. If you DON'T think that's flat out misleading or that I'm misrepresenting the inaccuracy/potential harmful effects of pushing those extremely lean physiques as being normal or expected, I strongly advise that you unsubscribe from me and stick to Jeff's videos instead and I wish you the best of luck.
Additional Note:
Here's another article from his website where he describes the chart: https://athleanx.com/articles/body-fat-percentage-where-are-you-at-and-whats-your-goal
Read this description of "11-12% Body Fat" and then try to tell me that he isn't promoting excessive leanness:
"In this range, you may see some abdominal definition if, for example, you want to oil yourself up and shine a bright light at yourself like this guy did. But who wants to walk around all slimy all the time?"
Once again, a true 11-12% body fat is leaner than 99%+ of the population and even that range will be challenging for most to maintain. To speak negatively about it is completely absurd.
Jeff Cavalier claims he goes 4% bf al year round with no losing his hair style 😂
I’ve had Lyme disease for the past couple years and it made it very hard to maintain my weight. Have been sub-10% body fat for a very long time without trying. Only just recently started putting on weight and let me tell you, low body fat may look nice but it feels like shit.
So many bro science experts in the comments section.
I'm just surprised you managed to not comment about the first line in the Instagram post where he claims body fat percent is the best way to measure progress of a strength program.
Took it to far going after my boy. Who’s next Richard Simmons?
I was at like 9 percent when competing in college track and running 70+ miles per week.
Why are you so jealous? We know that no one can obtain the look found in those pictures. I think you don't like him and choose one of his videos to knock.
It’s just a chart dude. Don’t be a hater. Following Jeff since 2010 and he’s always on point
Don't you know that the difference between abs and no-abs is the difference between 12% and 13% body fat?
How do we know you’re not just tryna sell your program lol
So glad your are saying this
Are body builders always beefing like this?
Run Forrest run.
Do some cardio
Finally! Somebody with healthy mind! ♥️ Love you man, you're the one that is not afraid to tell the real truth no matter what
When I was skinny I was 9% body fat I never had energy always hungry ate like shit felt like shit
Im at 20.7% body fat rn but I don’t understand why I look closer to the 25-27 range. I and very strong for my age and gender but it just doesn’t ahow
13 – 15-% is about what I’m rocking
Let’s be real: 13% looks great and is peak Bronze Age
How do you measure body fat?
Sean you are full of sh*t. Just focus on your own work. There is no need to bring other people to your channel. Unless you care more about clackbait and drama to promote yourself .
Jeff is a G.O.A.T 🐐 He himself has below 10% body fat and super fit ❤
I'm underweight because of hyperthyroidism and struggle with bulking. I'm 13% body fat and skinny as hell. I cannot imagine what being less than 10% feels like for long periods of time lol
I can’t mange 30 percent body fat
I still like Jeff though. He does have some good knowledge on the anatomy
Also take into account what method was used to get the BF%. A DEXA scan 10% would measure likely be 7..9% with 7 point calliper measurement.
never trust someone who's idea of a cheat meal is carrot cake ONCE a year.. " guys, being a normal human is killing your gains"
I live at 7 percent body fat
When I was a competitive long distance runner I was around 5%-7%. Granted I had no muscle and all I was doing was running around 70-100 miles a week
I settle at 12-18
Why talk about another personal trainer. Has he ever done that to you? I would like to know because I enjoy seeing your videos, but this video makes me not want to watch your videos.
I saw that video when it was first released he was just educating people on which body types they wish to be like and what each one is.
Athlene X points out the middle row is the healthiest to be so and the bottom is unhealthy. So that’s a load of sh*t lol
So what IS ideal range for the average person?
Well said brotha
"pharmaceutical assistance" is good. 😂
I am here trying to get that 16-19% look 😢
well with low body fat, id prob expect one of the symptoms to be hunger hahaha
I gotta say tho I started following athlean X a few years back and his advice is really good I got great results with his diet and exercise advice
i’m 8 percent body fat not even intentionally lol I just can’t gain wait, i’m so tired all the time it’s actually terrible 💀
There is a reason even the pros just maintain it until the shoot, and on and off season is a thing.
14-15% is already good enough for most people. If you go above 20% youll look kinda fat. Under 10% isnt sustainable long term and will likely cause damage to your body.
