So good thankyou for the tips! Beautiful drawing at the end too!
This is such a cool video!! Thankyou
Thank you, Tom. There are so few tutorials on oil pastels. If it was good enough for Picasso…

THANKS TOM!😮
I thinking of watching this since i want to improve my drawing with oil pastel it looks merely beginner stuff when i first used it
Like its crayons
Also the last part i would say it’s reverse scaffepito
Thankk you so much Tom ,im now motivated to have a go .
Somehow, I’m REAALLLY good at Oil Pastels. I’m not that good at art or any art medium, but oil pastels are a sweet spot for my art.
Thanks. I'm sorry but the fast forward is annoying me😳
I got some oil pastels and was wondering how to use them in different ways. so much fun making ocean waves but wished I had seen this video beforehand love that baby oil tip. <3
I REALLY REALLY Lovee your art!! We're counting on you!!🤩🤩
Wonderful Tom! I'm 69y.o. how could I have forgotten about Turps?? Great tutorial and reminder of Turps..
Excellent video.
The last example is basically a trace monotype technique. I like drawing this way but I prefer to coat tissue paper with a fine layer of oil pastel(like a carbon copy sheet). The thinner the paper the finer the lines. Aluminum foil, plastic bags and tracing paper have nice effects too. It's tricky to get a nice even coat of pastel onto such thin paper, but with some effort it can be done…so the resulting lines transferred to paper aren't so 'clumpy' looking. Drawn lines can be rubbed or smeared once traced/transferred for tonal or softening effects. If you don't like the clumpy lines look you can either scrape the excess off with an x-acto knife or use masking tape to lift the excess off the paper. I like to use a ball point pen to draw onto the tissue paper which can achieve some surprisingly fine lines onto your paper.
I found this helpful and also use pentel oil pastels myself.
Love this! Thank you. I bought some oil pastels recently with great images in my mind. Only to find that it looked like crayon! So I’m looking forward to playing with these techniques 😊
I just got a huge amount of oil pastels from a former college of my mother and tried using them. I have the problem that they smudge a lot and that sometimes ruins the art work.
Any advice regarding that?
I've literally had some oil pastels arrive today (in the August 2022 ScrawlrBox, which I subscribe to). I've never used them before, so I thought I'd see what I could find online as pointers and this video of yours came up Tom. I've subscribed and also really enjoyed watching what you did here. I loved the tip on using turps as a thinner and I'm going to give it a go with probably jojoba oil to see how it goes with that (I know it's not turps, but it's also a lot less stinky 😂). I'm actually really looking forward to seeing how I can manipulate the pastels now too! It was also really nice to see another left-handed artist. I do think there seems to be more left-handed artists making art and sharing tips on here and I think that all the other artists I follow are, at least to what I can remember, anyway! Thank you for the tips you've shown here, you've helped to fire my imagination.
thank u ❤️
Thank you for the lesson
Great.. ..
Please watch my Paintings….https://youtu.be/844EUAQEZgM
Super helpful – my kids loved it too.
Its nice to see other left handed artists 🥰
Considering I just paid about $100.00 for a few Senellier Pastels I would hope they don't look immature…
Thank you!
I live about 3 hours away from Monterey and am pretty sure I've walked on that beach. Love your painting of it. Thanks for the tips! Looking forward to playing around with them a bit. 🙂
Nice! Thank you
Thank you for making this video, there's not a lot on YouTube about oil pastels, they're a wonderful medium and should be elevated to beyond naive painting or children's painting, Oil pastels are much more than a crayon. Even a child's wax crayon can produce some wonderful results.
Music was SO LOUD.
This is very helpful to a beginner. I was looking for techniques to practice.
Just starting in oil pastels so this was quite informative!
Wowooo!!! Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Question. The little bits of pastel that get left on the canvas, what’s the best way to remove them? Or do you just leave them on?
Love this! Thank you for validating oil pastels! They are one of my favorite mediums and often get dismissed as a legitimate fine art medium. Will share this video with my students.
i like the music! can you tell me its name?
At first, oil pastels are hard to handle, but with experience it becomes a favorite medium!
Wow, your studio looks cool 💖😁
Nice demo
I’m sorry, this is just something I noticed. He reminds me of nick frost (not in a bad way(
Hi Tom love your videos , what is the best paper for oil pastel?
Nice painting of the seaside. It looks like an impressionist style oil painting.
I was stationed in Monterey and used to hear the seals barking every morning on the way to work. Unforgettable place, thank you for reminding me of it.
thanks for the video- very informative/ have been thinking to try them out and now you have sealed the deal 😛 looks fun!
Some of you got oil pastels in primary school? I got crayolas…clearly our funding wasn't as good.
I didn't notice which make of oil pastels Tom was using. Could anyone please help me out?
youre SO AWESOME BREUH!
New follower from the states. Actually sitting down with some PG Tips (those European genetics run deep) & watching your vids.
Very cool and inspirational. I'm going to experiment with baby oil, oil pastels and oil based colored pencils today. It is a messy medium though. I was leaving black marks wherever I walked and realized I had a piece of black crayon stuck on my shoe😂
