This is very helpful, thank you 🙏🏽.

I work in midtown NYC, and regularly bring from home my breakfast and lunch to work.
I start @ 7a, bring my bread and maybe butter and jam or brie. Not much, just something to… break my fast 😂
For lunch, I eat while I work at my desk @ 11:30a. Because I my lunch break is at 12:30 to 1:30 and I need a full hour before i got on my 1hr walk; And that’s walking as far as I can for 30mins and then 30mins back. With my morning and afternoon commute, all that walking is 11,000+ steps! I’ve also eliminated snacking. With my lunch I bring a fruit a d small pack of dark chocolate covered almonds/small bag of nuts and dried fruit. nothing greasy or salty.
So I tried in some way to adopt French habits.
I just need to get out more on the weekends 🤣 Which I will start soon.

I bought smaller plates and reduced portion size. I've been very poorly for the last few months and haven't managed to exercise regularly. Hopefully I'm on the mend now and will be able to lose the weight I gained. Looking forward to a fresh start in the new year.

I'm French and American! Born in Texas, my mother was from Paris, France met my father during WWII. I drink water all the time, even in my car I have a bottle of water. Drink 1/2 your body weight in water daily. One year several years back I lost 48 lbs and made up my own diet. Fats are good real butter, olive oil – sugars not good. I also cut out all White foods like cheap white bread but if I did have some bread it had to be full of non-bleached real grains, but I did not eat a lot of breads and I did have some angel hair pasta with alfredo yum but not often. But when I snacked it was healthy snacks popcorn, string cheese, hard boil eggs, yoghurt, strawberries, apples, etc. You can loose lots of weight with 3 meals daily and snacks, just pick the right snacks. Organic is the best if you can afford it. In the US Organic is harder to shop for than in Europe. Organic food is normal in Europe, here not so much. The restaurants in the US do not serve Organic foods which is a shame. Yes, they have some healthy restaurants, but they cannot guarantee where your food his grown…GMO foods yuck! Happy eating! Sysco foods is where most restaurants source their foods from, think frozen etc. The US has a lot to learn from Europe as far as smaller town food markets, homemade breads, not mass produced in some factory! ☺😉

Sadly, the local markets here in the US are obtaining and selling the same poor quality, mass produced, garbage that the grocery stores are selling and trying to pass it off as locally grown. My dream would be to move to France and live a healthier lifestyle.

I think one of the main reasons French, Italians, Spaniards and those in other EU countries look so much healthier is because they walk more. In N America, we are far too car-dependent and accustomed to drive-thru everything.. In France, villages and cities are so walkable and pleasant. It's just nice being out and walking to cafes, shops & restaurants. Even doing errands is pleasant when it's easily done with a short walk. Train travel is wonderful and if u r anywhere near a train line, u really don't need a car. Obviously, drinking water and having smaller portions is sensible but I truly think the very structure of the villages & cities in Europe renders walking so much easier than in Canada or the USA.

For a very few, we do have to be on a special diet, no change in habits will help. Due to having PCOS, I have to eat a largely bread free diet, eating pretty much a keto carnivore diet. (Vegans, before you jump down my throats with your ableism and classism , I’m very allergic to soy, many kinds of fruit and veg, and can’t afford $$$ vegan food all of the time, plus I live in a town of small grocery stores.) Even if I did eat bread and sweets in the moderation of the French way, I’d still gain weight due to hormonal insulin resistance. But I do agree, if you metabolism is largely functioning normally, the French way is better than the constant grazing of sweets, low activity, and large portions.

This almost completely matches the habits I developed while raised in France. With the exception of the shopping at the local market. But grocery stores in Frances are stocked enough on fresh, fresh produce. I've lived in the US my entire adult life and have reached middle age with the same waistline I had as when I was in my early 20's (after an initial surge as I adopted, then dropped, a number of American eating habits). These habits served me well, and I was able to adapt them to life in the US. The big American habit I dropped is soda. I also do my own baking for sweets, or else abstain. I have lost the palate for the American pastries, as they are too sweet. I bake my own bread as well, as the bread I find at the grocery store is sweet (which is weird to eat). Disclaimer here, I don't eat bread on a daily basis or else the baking of my own bread idea would not be manageable. I have a rice based diet. Rice is a lot quicker and easier to prepare.

I am able to shop in American grocery stores and maintain a healthy diet. It's not that difficult. If you spend more time in the fresh produce department and other raw ingredients areas, you are good to go. I strongly believe making meals from scratch is key for the waist line and for health.

I do follow the "faire attention" diet, where I make small adjustments to my eating as soon as my skirts become a little snug around the waist. But as far as self discipline goes, that's somewhat lacking. So I work with it. Even though I am a fully grown woman, I like my gouter. It takes me from lunch to dinner. I think of my gouter as a mini-meal as opposed to snacking. It's contained to once, at a regular time. If it is during a "faire attention" period, my gouter will be a cup of tea. I have trained myself to drink plain tea (no sugar, no milk). In the winter time, I drink hot tea. At night, it's herbal tea. In the summer time, I brew my own ice tea out of a variety of teas, my favorite being peach. It replaces fruit juices and sodas with a satisfying fruity flavor and a touch of sweetness. During meals, I drink water. One thing not mentioned in the video, is that the French do allow themselves wine with their meals, or beer depending on what goes with the food (in moderation). I don't drink alcohol so for me, it's just water.

to ppl for states, your food makes you fat, it is not a habit, french bread and regular bread in America are totally diff stuff. Also, food regulation policies, pesticides, and herbicides policies are very different between states and Europe. yes food habits are important, but it is harder here to stay slim rather than in Europe, I talk form personal experience

Hiii Marie ann … I'm indian … but I follow french eating habits ..I used to have wt issues … gaining and loosing wt .. I tried lot of diets but I would put back again and when I did not eat I would suffer from anemia and malnutrition… As I was a med student and I learned about medditerranean diet in my 3rd year and french paradox , it got me interested and I started living this lifestyle .. eat 3 times a day , no snacking , walking when ever possible , cutting out junk food and sodas , and cooking myself ..I love cooking and love long lunches and eat a stir fry vegetables and lentils ( sabzi and dal ) and fill up the corners with yogurt and lots of fruit .. and I m soo full that I don't even want to snack 😃😃 , I lean into seasons especially the fruit I eat as much as possible and jam the rest… this lifestyle helped me soo much … I maintain healthy wt and never suffered from malnutrition or dehydration or other issues again …

this is exactly what Americans are not doing…
they drink A LOT of sodas, energy drinks not plain water
they consume alot of processed foods , farmer markets are very rare in US, even in large cities. They actually have what they call food deserts, huge areas where you dont have anything other than fast-food restaurants
they also work many hours-alot of americans are overworked, many have 2 jobs for example, so taking a 2 hour lunch break is totally out of the question
they also have huge portion sizes…everything is supersized, from food portions, to cars, to houses…

The attitudes and eating behaviour of French women are similar to the Japanese (small portions, fresh high quality ingredients, slow eating) i eat vegetables first especially before carbs to get fiber in the stomach so that my insulin and energy levels are stable. Also the other benefit is that digestive enzymes in the vegetables help digest protein and slow down the absorption of sugar from carbs into the bloodstream. This is one secret to staying slim. Of course, sweets should be consumed occasionally, avoid added sugar, soda, sugary drinks and keep active during the day. Drink warm water. I follow all of these practices and I trust that it will keep me healthy and happy for much longer 💗😊.

Ok! Let me translate for us americans! Learn to cook like the french do! Knowing how to cook well will lessen your desire for foods that are of poor quality and taste! When you learn to cook a great T-bone steak you wont want Burger King! When you learn to pare a wine with dinner you wont want soda! When you get used to food with herbs and spices you wont want junk food ! When you start craveing real food you wont miss the snacks and junk foods!

Most important….Europeans walk to go everywhere. The catch a train, to go to work, to go to the supermarket and meet friends. If you walk that much, you cannot gain much weight. In the States we drive to put the trash out and everywhere else.

I'm a high school teacher in the US and I get about 25 minutes for lunch. By the time I join my friends, sit down and heat up my food I probably have about 15. ☹️ I am pretty firm on the rules that my lunch is sacred. If a kid wants to come in to work on something during lunch I schedule them for another time. I'm going to try to make better lunches now though instead of just some microwaveable frozen thing.
